I read this earlier, beautifully written and a strong message - If you can, stay at home and stay safe
Mr Rafferty
"They said the world was closed today so I went to have a look,
I found it with the shutters down
And the phone was off the hook.
So I stood there for a little while
But no one was around,
Then silence came and startled me, with the most alarming sound.
I asked him where the others were, and why the streets were bare,
He whispered ‘Life had ran away
While death was playing there’
‘Oh no’ I said ‘It can’t be true
For life is not afraid’
‘But no one ever goes’ he said
‘Where death has ever played.’
I understood and walked away
As Hope was standing there
With Courage in her afterglow
And the sunlight in her hair.
She said ‘Go home to those you love
This is no place to be,
For if we walk these streets today
Then no one shall be free’.
She threw her light to lead the way
And showed me where to go,
The very road that life had gone
Where the future flowers grow.
Then death showed me another way
But I didn’t want to look,
So I stumbled home in time for tea
And I read another book.
It was called The World is Closed Today
And the streets we shouldn’t roam,
The first line said ‘Just please be safe’
And the ending - ‘Stay at Home’
Stay safe. Keep others safe.

Mr Rafferty
St Malachy's family,
It's Sunday evening, the night before we enter another period out of school, which breaks our hearts Take three minutes and read what was sent to me earlier by a friend, and breathe, we'll get though this again... together
Mr Rafferty
"More gave to face teaching cancelled, both teachers and children miss face-to-face education. Many people are concerned about children falling behind because of this...but fall behind who ?
WHAT IF ....
What if instead of falling “behind", this group of kids are ADVANCED because of this? Hear me out.
What if they have more empathy, they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing.
What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own garden and sitting near a window in the quiet.
What if they notice the birds and the dates the different flowers emerge, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower?
What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, organize their space, do their laundry, and keep a well run home?
What is they learn to ride a bike, play a board game, do simple crafts, learn to bake, climb a tree, play without a screen?
What if they learn to Understand the value of money, what’s important and to live with less?
What if they learn to plan shopping trips and meals at home.
What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday?
What if they learn to just be, to be more resilient, to be content ?
What if they are the ones to place great value on our teachers and educational professionals, librarians, public servants and the previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place?
What if among these children, a great leader emerges who had the benefit of a slower pace and a simpler life to truly learn what really matters in this life?
What if they are AHEAD????"
Y7 Parents and Guardians, give your boys and girls a hug today
The news of the cancellation of the GL/AQE tests will have brought a mix of emotions to your houses today.
Boys and girls, you have worked so hard, and prepared so well for these tests, today's announcement will make some of you feel that it was all in vain.
IT WASN'T IN VAIN.
The work you have completed, the dedication to your studies, the committment you have shown over mid-term, Halloween and indeed the Christmas holidays will stand you in fine stead for your journey in Y8 post primary.
We couldn't be prouder of you all. And not just the 'transfer' children, all of our Y7s who lead the line in our school.
Our staff, and particularly our Y6 and Y7 teachers feel your disappointment, as they could see first hand your dedication to the task ahead.
It wasn't meant to be, but you will have so many other opportunities in the months ahead to shine.
Tonight might be the night for a take-away, a DVD or Netflix, and a reflection on the wonderful attitude to learning you all have.
Sit back boys and girls, and breathe.... and let your family give you a hug
Mr Rafferty
